Kano: Ex-Deputy Gov. Abandons Ganduje For Shekarau

As the crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to deepen, the party has been hit again with the alignment of Professor Hafiz Abubakar with Ibrahim Shekarau. Reports reveal that Abubakar, a former deputy to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje during his first tenure has left to join Shekarau, the governor’s arch enemy. Abubakar served as Ganduje’s deputy between 2015 and 2018 but left the governor during the build-up of the 2019 general election when he contested for governorship under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The party which was led by Kano former governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, at the time picked Abba Yusuf as the PDP candidate for the election leading to Abubakar’s move to the People’s Redemption Party. Also, reports say that after losing the primaries to Salihu Takai in PRP, Abubakar left the party to rejoin APC in Kano state. To further deepen the crisis within the party, two factions were formed with a leadership tussle between Governor Ganduje and Shekarau. However, on November 16, Abubakar in a swift move, made a surprise appearance at a political function organised by Ganduje’s arch-enemy, Shekarau.

At the function, he said no one should be surprised about seeing him at Shakarau’s event because he is aligning with ‘the truth and future.’ “Today, it is public knowledge that the leaders of APC in Kano go to public functions and tell us that the party belongs to three persons in the state- the governor, his wife and the chairman.”

He also warned that the future of the APC in Kano State is bleak unless drastic actions and strategies come into play before the 2023 general elections. He said that APC in Kano and the country, in general, has derailed from what it used to be and that his main aim of aligning with Shekarau is to save the party and the people of the state.

Meanwhile, Kano State Governor, Ganduje has hinted at his plan to reconcile with Ibrahim Shakarau.Ganduje and Shekarau have been at loggerheads with each other in politics and party rivalry in the state. Speaking on the cold war, Ganduje said reconciliation in politics is key to the development of any nation. He also said that he plans to reconcile with all aggrieved members of the APC and not just the former governor of the state, Shekarau.
