Gombe First Lady Donates Money To Rape Victims

Gombe State First Lady, Dr. Asma’u Inuwa Yahaya has canvassed support for fight against gender-based violence, saying that victims of child rape should not be  stigmatized and discriminated against.
  In collaboration with colleagues, she donated money to rape victims in the state to cushion the effects. Mrs. Yahaya urged parents to report rape cases to appropriate authorities,even as she reaffirmed commitment towards addressing the violence against women and girls in the society. 
In a statement, her media aide, Bintu Aliyu Sunmonu stated that the gestures were  part of the 16-days activism against gender-based violence, to mark the International Day for elimination of violence against women.
While presenting the money, the First Lady said that the Governors’ Wives Forum  was worried and concerned at the alarming cases of rape and attendant consequences on girls and women, hence drastic measures must be taken to address the menace.
She however lamented the attitude of  some parents who often fail to report rape cases  for  fear of stigmatization and discrimination.
She also expressed appreciation to the Human Rights Commission for ensuring that justice is served by sentencing two rapists to 25 years imprisonment saying that such will serve as deterrent to others.
The First Lady  advised parents to adhere to religious teachings on morals and parenting ,for no religion teaches violence or discrimination against women and girls.
The representatives of Human Rights Commission thanked Dr. Asma’u Yahaya for supporting them and standing up as role model for women  in the quest for a secure future.
 “They also promised to report and treat all rape and GBV cases, while not relenting efforts in the fight for rights of entire citizens.”
