Panic As Explosions Rock Maiduguri

An explosion at 1000 Housing Estate in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, has left residents in fear and confusion. A rocket launcher also landed at Gomari Airport, a community about four kilometres from the airport located in the state capital. Residents of the estate were spotted discussing the incidents in groups. A military source disclosed that troops of 33 artillery, Njimtelo, opened fire and engaged the insurgents when they sighted them, even as eyewitnesses said the explosions, suspected to have been carried out by Boko Haram insurgents, started very early with the first two exploding at Gomari Airport.

The third one reportedly landed in a building at 1,000 Housing Estate near Hajj Transit Camp, where the repentant Boko Haram insurgents are being housed. One Mallam Kulima who survived the explosions gave glory to God for sparing his life and that of his family.

He stated: “It was indeed a very sad day at 1000 Housing Estate, Maiduguri, Borno State , as Rocket Propel Grenade (RPG) landed in my house, No 2589, Elkenemi Street.” According to him, he was in his room when the rocket landed in his wife’s room. Some of his family members who were injured have been to the nearby clinic for treatment.

Another resident, Usman Ali, said the explosion destroyed a house in the estate very close to his own. He noted that no one was killed but a small boy of not more than nine years was injured. At the time of filing the report, all efforts to get confirmation or details of the attack proved abortive.
